What is encryption

Encryption is a way of scrambling data so that is can only be read by the authorised individuals who know the 'password/key' to unlock the data. Thus data is secure from prying eyes.

The Data Encryption Standard (DES) and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)are two of the most popular data encryption standards.

• DES was developed by IBM in co-operation with the American National Security Agency and published in 1974.
• The AES - Advanced Encryption Standard, is a newers algorithm chosen by the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology .
